Wisteria Courtyard

Central to the beauty of the courtyard garden is the Chinese wisteria planted by Howard in 1939 to shade the upstairs bedrooms. The vine on one side grows around the Doric column in its natural direction, counter-clockwise; the other one was trained to grow around the column clockwise. Now about eighty years old, and well past its natural life expectancy, the wisteria continues to be spectacular, especially during springtime when the cascading purple blossoms fill the air with their fragrance.
