Drying Yard

Long before the advent of clothes dryers, families hung their clothes outside on clothes lines. This garden room provided a secluded place where the laundry could be hidden from the street and the more formal parts of the garden.

This special area is enclosed by mature specimens including an exceptionally large white enkianthus, a Princess Elizabeth rhododendron, brought back from England after the Queen’s coronation, and a white pine which is one of the tallest trees on the property.
