In case you were wondering...
It's that time of the year again. All those plugs of mud are on our lawn are the result of aeration. This practice helps to improve soil quality by reducing compaction. More room between soil particles means more room for grass roots to grow!

Lois Wisneski first started volunteering at Van Vleck about 10 years ago, helping our garden manager, Laura, in the gardens. Living in an apartment at the time, Lois missed gardening and having access to actual soil. A friend told her about Van Vleck, so she came and fell in love with the place and the people. A year later, she moved into the carriage house on the property and soon began volunteering as a docent for the Nature Connections Field Trip Program. This program for kindergarten and first grade students was a natural fit for Lois as a retired special ed teacher. Over the years she has also enjoyed volunteering for the Plant Sale and the preparations for the many events around the holidays. Volunteering at Van Vleck has been an ongoing educational experience as well as an opportunity to socialize and make new friends with like interests.

We thank Lois for her long time support and involvement and appreciate her dedication to our community!

These intriguing plants, commonly called toad lilies, are a genus of about 16 species of herbaceous perennials that grow from the Eastern Himalayas to the Philippines. They are unique because of their ability to flower in shaded areas and their late summer to fall bloom time. Do you know the scientific name of these magnificent Asian flowering plants?
