Outdoor Adventures

Looking for something to do on a Saturday morning?  Come to Van Vleck and visit our Education Center anytime between 10 am to 1:00 pm.  An environmental educator will discuss various topics relating to nature in and around the gardens.  A simple craft will be offered, as well as supplies for a self-guided activity on the property.  Everything you need to enjoy quality time with your family is here for you.  Activities are designed for children ages 4 and up; however, all are welcome.  All children must be supervised by an adult.  Rain or shine.

Maple Sugaring

Saturday, March 3rd

Tour Times:  1:30 pm, 2:00 pm (the 1:00 pm tour time is sold out!)

Come to Van Vleck House & Gardens for a tour and demonstration of the process of Maple Sugaring.  A sugar maple tree in Mother’s Garden at Van Vleck will be tapped, and if the weather cooperates the sap will be flowing. Families are invited to visit us as we learn how to identify a sugar maple tree and discover the steps for turning sap into syrup.  At the conclusion of the tour, there will be a taste testing of course!  Don’t miss this deliciously sweet event!  Reserve your tour time today.  Tour lasts approximately 1 hour.

Spring Birding Hikes for Families

Saturday, March 10th

9:00 – 10:00 am

When March arrives, the birds know it. They begin the preparations for the very busy season ahead. Spring is all about making a home to raise young. Come take a walk to see what birds are doing to prepare for the coming of Spring. We may see some early migrants, too. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars.

Friday, March 23rd

3:00 – 4:00 pm

Spring has arrived! Come take a walk with us to see what signs of spring are in the garden. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. 

These hikes are for families, but individuals without children are also welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

$5 per person for Friends of Van Vleck; $7 for General Public. Maximum fee per family: $15 per family for Friends of Van Vleck; $21 per family for General Public.

A Sensory Celebration

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, Van Vleck House & Gardens invites you to explore the gardens using your senses as your guide.  What colors and shapes do you see? What sounds do you hear around you? What smells are in the air? Activity stations will be arranged outdoors and in our education center focusing on different textures, smells, shapes and colors in the natural world.  Join us for a stress free afternoon of garden discovery.  Open to families. Check our website for rain date information. 

Suggested donation – $10 per family
