The Five Essentials of Composting

Thursday, October 19th

7:00 – 8:30 PM

This fun lecture explains why composting is one of the most important steps toward improving your gardening experience, and the garden itself. First, get right down to the roots of the subject by considering the importance of soil (“Dirt 101”), and how it can be improved. Then, you’ll discover how to transform your leaves, garden clippings, plant prunings, and certain kitchen scraps into a healthy, nutrient-rich soil conditioner. We will discuss the “who/what/where/why/when”, as well as the “how-to”. Learn the Five Essentials of successful backyard composting, what should go in or stay out of the heap, tips for making more compost faster, the many uses of compost, and appropriate bin selection and placement.  Composting is good for your soil, and good for your soul, and participants will leave this lecture with a much improved sense of humus.  The instructor, Gray Russell, is the Sustainability Officer for the Township of Montclair.  He is a Master Composter, and the former Compost Project Manager at The New York Botanical Garden.  He’s helped thousands of people begin composting over the past thirty years, and has been featured on TV programs including Martha Stewart “Living” (CBS), “Live” with Regis & Kathy Lee (ABC), and the Home & Garden Network (HGTV).
